  • CIVIL WAR EVENT/DEATH: Major Amos McLemore was dispatched
    temporarily from the front back to Jones County to round up deserters who had
    returned there. The leader of a number of the resident deserters, Newton Knight,
    reputedly shot McLemore in the back as he prepared for bed. McLemore, a guest
    of state Representative Amos Deason at his home on the outskirts of Ellisville,
    had spent the afternoon and evening in conversation with Deason, other officers
    and friends in the parlor of the house.

  • CIVIL WAR EVENT: The Natchez Courier erroneously reports that Jones CO has succeeded from the confederacy.

  • CIVIL WAR EVENT: General Leonidas Polk dispatches soldiers to Jones CO, in response to the Knight Company.

  • CIVIL WAR EVENT: Irvin Sellers was part of The 20th MS, which was engaged in restoring order in
    Jones Co., MS. Lawlessness was rampant in Jones County due largely to a band
    of outlaws and army deserters led by Newton Knight who had murdered Major
    Amos McLemore (nephew of Richard McLemore, and also perhaps, nephew of
    Sarah Joriah McLemore, Richard's sister.)

  • DEATH: At some point abt this time, Richard McLemore makes the first interment behind
    the church he had built by burying a woman he had brought with him to Meridian,
    named Mrs Tyner. (His mother?). This was also the first church ever built in
    Meridian, MS: Calvary Baptist Church.

    families in the Jones CO area.
